Background & Job Description
The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) is calling on enthusiastic, community-based individuals to apply for seven Fieldworker positions under the ARISE Network NUTRINT Project. This critical health research initiative is housed within the School of Nursing and Public Health and is centered on adolescent nutrition and prevention of diet-related diseases in South African communities.
The successful candidates will operate primarily within the USINGA HDSS site in Umlazi, targeting wards 79 and 82. As a key part of this field-based team, the Fieldworkers will engage directly with adolescents aged 10–24 years, ensuring effective data collection and participant follow-ups that contribute to meaningful public health research.
Tasks
- Recruit and enroll adolescent participants aged 10–24 years
- Conduct follow-up visits with participants from the earlier phase of data collection
- Administer standardised survey questionnaires
- Perform haemoglobin testing via finger prick, and take height and weight measurements
- Trace and track participants for data collection
- Refer individuals to appropriate health services where necessary
- Assist the project coordinator and data manager in maintaining data quality assurance standards
Qualifications
- Grade 12 (Matric) is mandatory
- Tertiary qualification in any of the following fields is advantageous:
- Public Health
- Psychology
- Social Work
- Related health sciences disciplines
Experience
- Minimum of 1 year working with research data tools such as REDCap or similar platforms
- Proven experience with home or community-based research
- Prior involvement in working with adolescents
- Skilled in measuring anthropometric data (weight and height) and haemoglobin levels
- Demonstrated ability to conduct home visits and follow-ups for research purposes
- Must have basic computer literacy skills, particularly in Microsoft Office
- Comfortable working during weekends and late afternoons
- Must reside in Umlazi Township, specifically ward 79 or 82
- Possession of a valid driver’s licence
- Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification is a must
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Must be fluent in both isiZulu and English
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
